The Complete Reference to Fixed Life’s Work in Human Design
Seventy percent of the energetic imprint that grounds a human being into this life comes through the Sun. When the four gates of an Incarnation Cross (Personality Sun/Earth + Design Sun/Earth) complete one or more channels, the life’s work acquires a fixed, reliable, and consistently available quality. The definition is already present. It does not require another person or a transit to switch the light on.
Of the 192 Incarnation Crosses, only a specific subset does this. The list below is exhaustive: 48 cross entries across 28 hexagrams. These are the only configurations in which the Cross itself creates channel definition. Reflectors never appear on them. The moment a channel forms, definition is present.
These crosses are not “better.” They are mechanically different and specialized in a fixed way. Most designs carry potential that needs engagement with life or the other to activate. These carry a built-in consistency. Their purpose is lived through them in a way that is already defined.
The Mechanics
An Incarnation Cross is formed by four gates. When those four gates include a harmonic pair (or pairs), a channel is completed. In the majority of cases one channel is formed. In four hexagrams (20, 34, 53, and 54) the Cross completes two channels simultaneously, producing an especially strong fixed signature.

The Four Quarters and the Learning–Fulfillment Pattern
The Personality Sun moves around the wheel through the four Quarters. Inside each Quarter the first half is initiation/learning of that theme; the second half is its concretization and fulfillment. The same layered pattern repeats:
- Quarter of Initiation — Purpose fulfilled through Mind
- Quarter of Civilization — Purpose fulfilled through Form
- Quarter of Duality — Purpose fulfilled through Bonding
- Quarter of Mutation — Purpose fulfilled through Transformation
When a Cross that forms a channel appears in the learning half of a Quarter, the fixed channel expresses the learning of that theme. When it appears in the fulfillment half, the same channel expresses the concretization of the theme. The channel itself is consistent; the Quarter colors how that consistency is lived.

Why the Fixedness Matters
When one or two arms of the Cross create a channel, the thematic of that channel becomes a consistent, trustworthy part of the life’s work. The purpose is already switched on. This does not mean the person is free from conditioning, nor does it override Type, Strategy, or Authority. A defined channel does not protect anyone from the not-self. It simply means the frequency of that channel is a reliable strand within their purpose expression.
You will never find a Reflector on any of these crosses. Definition appears the moment the channel forms.
It is also not useful to rank them. Someone whose Personality Sun sits in an undefined center and needs the other to turn the light on is not less purposeful. Their purpose simply operates through engagement. Someone with fixed definition is not more “evolved.” Their purpose simply has a built-in consistency. Everything is unique. Comparing geometries usually leads the mind into “this is good / that is bad,” which misses the point.
Practical Notes for Living and for Analysts
Incarnation Cross analysis is most useful after a significant period of deconditioning, and especially after age fifty for many people (particularly sixth-line profiles). Before that, the most valuable work remains Strategy and Authority. Pure Generators, in particular, do not need more mental content; they need to learn to trust response.
When keynoting these crosses, hold the language lightly. Layers of keynotes (line, color, tone, base) sit underneath the surface names. What feels rigid in one moment can open into greater precision later. Curiosity serves better than certainty.
The fixedness of these channels is part of the evolutionary movement of the species. As we are born, civilize, bond, breed, transform, and die, these particular definitions keep certain consistent frequencies available in the field. They are not the whole story. They are a reliable strand within the larger tapestry.
Your design is already the correct instrument for your purpose. Whether that purpose arrives already defined through a channel or arrives through engagement with life, the only thing that unlocks it is living according to your own Strategy and Authority. Everything else is commentary.
Trust the form. The light of purpose finds its way through whatever architecture you were given.
